AFTER AIR-DRYING
After being left to air-dry in an enclosed place, the potter adds various elements to the pieces, such as handles, which are shaped beforehand by hand using softer clay.
The spouts of botijos (traditional water jugs), made separately on the potter’s wheel, are also attached to the finished piece after making an opening in its body with a stick.
Depending on the type of decoration, it was applied at different stages of the process. Incised decoration was made while the fresh piece was still turning on the wheel. The simple designs found on painted pottery were applied using oxides before firing.
The pieces were then left to dry: in the sun in the case of ordinary pottery, or in the shade for finer ceramics. Afterwards, they were stored until they were ready to be fired.
