LA SIERRA
For sawing, wine; and for the saw, bacon.
The logs were sometimes cut up in the forest itself, and at other times beside the house or village. It was necessary to build a supporting structure, also made from logs, on which the trunk to be sawn was placed.
They used a large saw, a long trapezoidal saw with a handle at each end: one fixed to the wider end and another movable handle fitted near the teeth at the narrower end.
Because of its considerable size, this saw had to be operated by two or three men. One man stood on top of the log, holding the fixed handle and moving the saw up and down lengthwise. His companions, working from below, guided it using the other handle and prevented the blade from twisting.
